Laspias River Basin

Laspias River is part of the River Basin District of Thrace, in the Nestos River Basin occupied an area of 221.8 km2. The catchment of the Laspias is characterized by plains and natural areas with low vegetation and intense agricultural activity.

Specifically, the Laspias river basin (code EL12-07) includes two heavily modified water bodies that flow to the river mouth of Abdera into bathing shores and protected coastal areas. Habitat fragmentation, nitrate pollution and recipient of organic load (landfill, WWTP, industries) are observed. There is no “unit” management approach because only a few parts of the catchment area are protected (Natura 2000). The chemical and ecological quality status is categorized as lower than "good" (River Basin Management Plan and 1st Review; RBMP/20-12-2017).

The chemical groundwater status of the eastern part of the groundwater system of Delta Nestos (EL1200060) in the hydrological basin of the Laspias river is categorized as “poor” from local loadings with NO3, NO2, NH4, EC and CL due to anthropogenic pressures and salinization (GG(FEK)4680 / Β '/ 29-12-2017).
